Agritop Limited has successfully imported bumble bees through collaboration with the offices of the Plant Protection Regulatory Services Directorate PPRSD here in Ghana received the first consignment of imported bumble bees into Ghana on Tuesday, 12th February, 2019 from BioBee. The consignment consisted of six hives which will be placed into the greenhouses on the farm site to allow for the insects pollinate the flowers. If this intervention succeeds it will spell a breakthrough for greenhouse production in Ghana especially in tomato production.
Successful and effective pollination is every farmers wish more so for tomato and melon production in the greenhouse. The introduction of biological agents is one area through which pollination can be improved upon and has been proven to be an effective solution to pollination problems in Israel and other parts of the world. One of such is the bumble bee Bombus terrestris.
B. terrestris, is a natural pollinator of various crops. Greenhouse tomato is the major
crop, and added to this are sweet pepper, eggplant, strawberry, melon and courgette. Bumblebees are very efficient pollinators. They can deliver up to a 28% increase in production under ideal conditions.
